A best friend with unconditional love

Think Rin-Tin-Tin, Lassie, Benjie, Snoopy...; I have...; now I appreciate Mikey. Mikey is my 3-year old 'puppy,' (Shepherd, Chow, Wolf mix) who adores and endures me. Mikey is neglected, rejected on occasion, and yet offers unconditional love in return. Mikey is always there when you need a hug. Ruffling and fluffing his soft furry ears gives me joy.

Recently, I read that in choosing a pet, choose a dog, and he will view you as a friend; choose a cat, he will view you as 'staff.' I love this analogy, as I have Mikey and six little, once-orphaned fluffers. Today, the topic is Mikey and why he is special. Just as special as your 'Mikey.' Take another look today at your 'Mikey' and let me know how he has touched and become an inseparateable part of your life.

Mikey knows, by the shoes I put on, whether or not he will be going 'bye-bye in the car (sneakers),' or whether he will be staying home (high heels), with his 'job' to 'guard the house and guard the kitties.' He knows that if I leave a light on, I'll be gone for a long while.

Mikey also knows how to count to three. He knows that his first morning outing is after three disconnects of the snooze alarm. Yesterday, he got confused on his counting or was otherwise being recalcitrant. After the first alert of the alarm, he started his whining (he doesn't bark to go out, but whines pitifully). When he received a negative response by my turning over and pulling the covers more snugly over my head, he rousted about until I still had puppy breath in my face. Trying to be consistent in his upbringing, I remained firm about the third alert.

Mikey initially came to me in a round-about way, at about 3 months old, and with a little basic training - some of which I wish he would forget. His former owner loved him unqualifiedably but couldn't sustain himself, let alone this faithful companion. Through much trauma, Mike is MY special puppy, constant companion when I'm around, and protector.

All of which says, one best friend, simple sunshiny days (I live in FL), simple pleasures. What else could one ask for.
