This a pine marten. This photo was taken from a great distance, to avoid getting mauled by one of these ferocious beasts. The pine marten is Newfoundland's most deadly animal. They can grow up to two feet long, and have talons on the end of their razor-sharp wings. Because they move so fast, they are a danger to small children, and enfeebled adults.
This is a local. Note the lack of razor-sharp wings.

The cannons pictured in the lower left corner of this photograph are used each year to shoot the icebergs before they enter the St. John's harbor. This prevents problems with shipping, and is heralded in by the locals with much glee.
